Stephen King
Dec. 3rd, 2003 09:00 amAwhile back I read something by Stephen King, or an interview w/Stephen King, & he said that when he finished the Dark Tower series he was retiring... "The Wolves of Calla" is available now, & ol' Steve is in a Maine hospital w/pneumonia. Why is it that when these artists retire, they die? Mel Blanc, Charles Schultz, and soon Stephen King will probably be following suit... I grew up reading King. I've watched his writing progress from hack horror fiction (Carrie) to some poignant & eloquent Art (Insomnia, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon)... His writing definitely sucks you in, holds you tight & takes you on the Wild Ride. I've grown to hate some of his characters as much as I've grown to love others. Stephen King wrote the only book that horrified me so badly I could never get past the first few pages... (Gerald's Game). I love his usage of modern icons & the way he starts off chapters w/a line from a song or a poem... The way he can take the ordinary and transform it into something eerie, something wyrd, something covered in foo-lights & not quite part of the mundane world. He's taken his familiar stomping grounds & introduced us all to the wonders of Derry, Castle Rock, 'Salem's Lot... I hope he recovers speedily and thoroughly, and I hope he isn't serious about retiring now that "Wolves..." is on the shelves, because I'd miss him terribly.
On a different note: Easy money, baby!!!
