Went to Red Lobster for lunch today. They tortured us all last night w/their shrimp feast ads...

My review:
Rob got shrimp & chicken & I went with the Broiler Combo. The prices weren't too scary, til we added the cup of clam chowder & a Lobster Pizza appetizer.

Half of the lobster pizza came home w/us - it was on a thin crust w/a white sauce, tomatoes, basil & was something I would have expected to see on Emeril's menu - not a chain. It was really good :) However, I was disappointed in the clam chowder. It seemed like Campbell's Clam Chowder - small bits of potatoes, almost no clam to be found (and the piece I did score had sand in it), and a thin cream base. For a seafood place, they could, and should, do better. Hooter's still has my heart as far as clam chowder goes - thick, good flavor, rich in ingredients - the way clam chowder should be. I am also not sure why people rave endlessly about the cheddar biscuits. I mean, yes, they are good biscuits, and we got ours fresh, but the cheddar was only on the outside and didn't have much of a cheesy bite. They are good biscuits, tho. Rob ate most of my Caesar salad.

(This is where my lunch review was rudely interrupted because my new keyboard has a button right under the 'delete' key that turns the computer's power off. Yup, a power button, on the keyboard, right under the 'delete' key. Who in the fuck puts a power button somewhere that part of your finger might accidentally land? I took a screwdriver & popped the damned thing off the kb, along w/the 'sleep' & 'wake' buttons next to it. Luckily, lj has a 'save draft' feature, so I was able to restore the fruits of my labor.)

Rob's shrimp & chicken was very good. The shrimp were big & had an excellent dry rub with good flavor & texture. The chicken was close to barbecued. Seasoned mashed potatoes for both of us, both also very good. On my plate was 'broiled' shrimp scampi, stuffed sole & bay scallops. The sole was to die for. Flaky, tender, only one bone in three pieces. The stuffing was similar to a soggy crab cake in the middle, but good where the crust had formed between the pieces of sole. The shrimp scampi was edible, but the shrimp was small and it seemed like the garlic butter sauce was mostly just butter. I was very sad for the bay scallops. They were so tiny I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be away from home. The texture was good, which is hard for most restaurants to achieve even for bigger scallops, but the seasoning overwhelmed the delicate flavor.

Overall, I don't think I'll be begging for Red Robster any time soon. If I do, I'll probably go for the more expensive lobster or crab. Rob asked me if I wanted a live Maine lobster, & I told him I wasn't ready to set up a saltwater tank in the living room. Ed & Nessie might get jealous, since fish take up so much time for maintenance.

Other than that, I've pretty much slept all weekend. I've got letters to write, I have been trying to get my desk cleared before the new semester begins, and I did get some of that accomplished. But all I've wanted to do has been sleep.
