30 Days of Books - Day 4
Aug. 7th, 2010 03:06 pmDay 04 – Your favorite book or series ever
Of all the books I've read, it's still Watership Down. I think this is probably because it was my first 'grown-up' book. I was probably 6 or 7 when my mother handed it to me in a library. I can honestly say that was the nicest thing the woman ever did for me. I had read plenty of short stories that were at a higher reading level - Ray Bradbury, Charles Forte, Isaac Asimov - things my parents had lying around the house, but WD was my first novel.
It gave me a good understanding of common literary themes and devices. It gave me, even at that age, a feeling that the author was writing more than just a fairy tale about rabbits. Richard Adams introduced me to the Hero's Journey and Deus ex Machina. I loathe Deus ex Machina now, honestly fucking hate it... but a rabbit riding in a hrududu? Fantastic!
As far as series go... it's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The other day, I forgot about THGttG. I forgot that it counts as a series. I could easily keep reading those - if Douglas Adams was still alive, that is.
