I got a new camera today - this one has slightly better zoom & a macro function. It's a Nikon CoolPix L18 (which was on sale at BestBuy - Rob's mom gave us our anniversary present a little early). I was looking at SLR's online today, but I am not a professional photographer & a 'decent' SLR starts at around $400. The ones considered 'sub- or pre-' SLRs were also in the $300 - $400 range. All I really want to do is take decent photos of plants. Not art-quality or professional quality, just sharp decent photos to put on my website so I don't have to steal borrow other people's photos or wrangle w/rights or buy stock photos.

This one was taken w/the Nikon. It's a little dark. Some of the pics were coming out kind of blue, but I tinkered w/some of the light settings & finally got the yellowish tint that our indoor lighting normally has. I was pretty impressed at the detail on it - this is just a normal auto-focus photo: I'm ready for my close-up! )

Of course, I had to go to the eye doc today & got my eyes dilated, so shopping for a camera in this condition was probably not the wisest thing to do. Oh well. I compared a couple of lower-end Canons, a couple of Fujis, an Olympus & the Nikons. The mid-range Canons were just grainy, especially on the macro functions, and the colors were muddy. When I looked at the $900 - $1200 ones, they were so clear & sharp it was more real than real life, of course, but at $150, crap, pure crap. The Kodaks at BestBuy all lacked a macro function (as does my Polaroid). The Fujis were nice, but when I picked up the Nikon, all the hype about name-brands finally made sense. Nikon knows how to make cameras, and they don't sacrifice quality or options on their lower end cameras. Looking through some of the Nikon SLRs, though - want. Big time want. Stuff is so sharp & clear it looks almost 3D, which is cool for me & my 2D vision. I will never opt for a flat-screen monitor because my CRT gives me the illusion of depth, and that's what the Nikon SLRs did.

Here's some Chelsie love w/the Polaroid. It's a decent camera for outdoors, but it blows indoors.

Say Sausages! )

I could see this whole photography thing becoming a bona-fide hobby. I'm kind of seeing why my dad enjoyed so much about it. Of course, my dad's favorite camera was a folding Brownie, complete w/hood & tripod. I don't know if he'd have as much fun w/the new digital cameras as he did w/the old film cameras.
