Rob dismantled his hard drive from his old computer so I could see inside it. The platters (the storage section of a hard drive) float between two very powerful magnets & the read/write heads never actually touch the platters. We deconstructed the thing further (well, we basically pulled the thing apart like chimpanzees investigating a clock radio, but you get the idea), and we've had the magnets laying around the house for awhile now. Rob's had them stuck to the tacks this big wooden fork & spoon hang off of (I'd take pictures but my camera battery is dead & the flash won't work). I pinched the snot out of the side of my hand while playing with these magnets - they will hold onto each other even through the thickness of a hand or foot - and you feel your body part getting warm between them, which is cool but also a little scary.
For whatever reason Rob decided to pull the magnets down & play with them before he took his shower. He slapped them together & the one magnet pulled the other of its steel mount. When he managed to separate them (with help from a pair of pliers & a claw hammer), the one magnet had ripped free of its own chrome coating which was still stuck to the steel mount - not by virtue of adhesive, but because it was also magnetized.
Ah, the things that amuse us.
Rented The Golden Compass since I finished the book last weekend. It'll be interesting to see how they move the story along. It was interesting, but honestly the story moved a little too smoothly - Lyra seemed to escape from her entanglements a little too easily. I guess that's what happens when Fate is pushing you along a given path. At least she wasn't dragging me along with her in my dreams all weekend. One night of that was quite enough.
I have also mentioned Bell, Book & Candle to two people in the last few days, which means someone is probably thinking of me.
The back porch light just came on. Gotta go.
