perzephone | Browser Woes

I tried Firefox most of last night and was okay with it. Has a menu bar, won't hijack my search engine... today, though, it did something else that utterly and completely pisses me off.

When I enter a search term into my address bar, say 'steak tartare' for instance, I want to be given a list of potential sites that have 'steak tartare' mentioned in them. I don't want to be taken directly to a website. I especially do not, under any circumstances, want to be sent directly to wikipedia*'s entry for 'steak tartare'. I fiddled around with Foxfire's search settings, tried different toolbars & default search engines and still, no results list, just wikipedia.

I came to the nasty conclusion today that Foxfire's pop-up blocking and cookie handling is not as versatile as IE or Google Chrome. Foxfire is an all-or-nothing approach. It doesn't warn you when it's blocked a pop-up and it either makes you accept or deny all cookies, nothing in between. I don't like that.

I would be willing to give Foxfire another chance if I could find information on how to adjust Foxfire's search display options and the cookie/pop-up handling, but until then I guess it's back to IE & Chrome.

(*In case anyone is wondering, I loathe wikipedia. Yes, chances are in the most mundane cases, the information on any given wikipedia page is generally acceptable, but there's a reason why college professors tell their students to avoid wikipedia and most will not accept it as a cited resource.)
